Portraits of the vulvaEach vulva has her own personality, a personal face, a unique message, each has her own preferences and moods. As an artist and a photographer I try to capture and show the personality, the beauty, the diversity, the essence of the vulva. It is simply an elevating moment when a woman can see the beauty of her vulva in the portrait. There is a sense of deep wholeness and integrity. Disintegrated pieces are falling into place, re- union is happening. As a course facilitator and counselor for personal development I know about the healing potential inherent in this work, because the ability to see evokes the ability to perceive the truth.Inquiry into the personal sexual biographyDuring the last 4000 years sexuality has been misused again and again for means of power and the same is still happening today. At the same time the vulva has become a mythic, legendary, often feared, a powerful and damned place. Because of this we have to take on the task of bringing clarity into our eroticism. Does it get nourishment from lust and joy, is it connected to the heavens and does it bring the heaven down to earth again and again? Or is it informed by suffering and suppression? Do we mistake surrendering for becoming a victim and do we victimize ourselves perpetually repeating a personal and collective trauma, which is waiting to be healed. Meanwhile we hope for our own deliverance – and the fulfilling orgasm. The women who are taking part in the vulva-project can investigate their own sexual biography in an individual or group process. If this inquiry finds a form (be this a poem, a recording, a text, a video documentation or a drawing), this expression can become part of the exhibition. The contribution does not have to adhere to any artistic or design standards. It is important that the expression comes from a place of authenticity and truth and due to this it will be touching. My motivationMy aim is to give space to a public veneration and celebration of these portals of life, to facilitate the reconnection of the sacred with the flesh. It is important that lust is again in service of love. Before this can happen it must be possible for it to just be. As long as it is hanging out in these half-shamed, pornographic corners eroticism cannot be free and of service to love, the life force cannot flow. If we want peace on this earth lust has to be subject to love. Love as a part of the bigger picture is of service to life and its growth. Once this integration has happened we are whole, healed and holy. The exhibition is my contribution to this vision.ExhibitionThe work becomes an exhibition.I am putting a lot of emphasis on creating a cultivated and refined public space and in organizing events around the exhibition which build awareness. The setting is free of pornography. In each exhibition there will be the portraits of the vulvas, possibly some personal contributions which have evolved out of the inquiry into the sexual biography and eventually some complementary works of other artists. GoalThe aim of this exhibition is to create a space in which the vulva can be made visible in her uniqueness and her diversity.Being part ofIf you are interested in this project and you would like to be part of it, you can get some more information on the Contract page.
